Eagan: Maurice Patrick Joseph,
Peacefully at his home in Simcoe Manor Nursing Home Beeton, on Sunday April 5, 2020. Patrick Eagan, in his 91st year, beloved husband of the late Phyllis Baker. Loving father of David (Mary Ridley), Janet and Karin. Loved grandfather of Patrick, Nicholas, Brandon, Brianna, Rhys, and Gwendolyn. Dear brother of the late Charlie (Marlene), the late Gerry (the late Anne), the late John, the late Ed (Mary), the late Vince (Bernie, and the late Evelyn), and the late Rita Eagan Fitzgerald (the late Ed). Remembered with love by his many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Patrick, like his siblings and many ancestors, was born on the Eagan family homestead, on Lot Four, Concession Three in Tottenham. As the fifth child of seven children born to Thomas George Eagan and Teresa Margaret Eagan (nee Walsh), and one of six boys in the family, young “Patty Mo” was very involved with the family farm. He also immensely enjoyed visits with his Walsh and Ronan cousins from Adjala. After completing elementary school locally he went to Banting Memorial High school in Alliston, then onto a brief career as a teacher in Mount Forest. From there he joined the Armed Forces where he was stationed at Camp Borden among other locations and rose to the title of Lieutenant. Missing his academic pursuits, he followed his older brother Charlie and enrolled at the University of Western Ontario in London. After a year, he transferred to the University of Toronto, St. Michael’s College to join his brother Ed, where he double-majored in English Literature and Philosophy. After graduating with an Honours BA, Patrick immediately immersed himself in the Book Publishing industry. He worked in sales at Macmillan Publishers before moving into editorial positions and after moving to Nelson Publishers he rose to the position of President at the age of 37. It was at Nelson’s he met his future wife Phyllis who he would marry many years later. After Nelson’s he briefly worked as General Manager of Clark Irwin Publishers before switching industries to Real Estate. Donning his sales hat again, he made a name for himself as a recognized and respected agent in his community and was well-loved by co-workers and clients alike before he (reluctantly) retired at the age of 75.
He had an avid interest in Canadian history, and at times politics, and was immensely proud to be Canadian. He loved the landscape of our country and one of his greatest pleasures was a driving trip exploring our great country, often stopping (to the lament of his young children or any extended family joining him) at each and every historical landmark along the way. This was usually followed by a camping trip at Algonquin or Killbear with family and friends, which he thoroughly enjoyed. He was an avid reader and would scour the paper cover-to-cover almost daily where he would take in, and recall, details with great acumen. He was immensely sociable and looked forward to any opportunity to exchange a few words, and hopefully a joke or two, with others. He loved a good party which, although may have been a downfall as a rambunctious young man a few times at university, stayed with him until the end. In November, 2019 he celebrated his 90th birthday with a party and he was delighted to have so many family members there to celebrate this special milestone.
The family would like to thank Dawn, Joan, Tammy and all the Nurses and Caregivers at Simcoe Manor Beeton for their outstanding care and compassion for Pat over the years. Arrangements entrusted to Rod Abrams Funeral Home Tottenham. Cremation will be held. In the wake of Covid-19 pandemic, a public Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be planned in the coming months. Patrick and I met in 1989 when I moved from Nova Scotia to Toronto. He kindly took me under his wing and mentored me through those early years of my real estate career. A number of years ago, I had an opportunity to visit him in Peterborough and thank him for the meaningful impact he had on my life. To this day, memories of his sharp mind, quick wit and the many laughs we shared over a cup of tea fill my heart with gratitude. He was a blessing.

Uncle Pat was a strong character throughout all of our lives. He was the solo suit wearing Eagan for a longest time. Even in a suit, he was able to (easily?) wrestle the wild human pack that lived at the farm all at once. I recall him challenging us to try to knock him down and valiantly holding us off for a time. Living with him in Toronto as a student, he taught many valuable lessons the strongest being patience and kindness. He was an optimist and I recall him hoping some love of Physics would transfer to Karin.
I have long assumed I was his favourite Godson, but I am not sure if I have any competition.
His stories and cunning teasing kept us both interested and on our toes. A great man from a great era. Long may his legacy live through our story telling (and retelling in true Eagan fashion).

I remember the first time I met Pat Eagan ,
It was at Marg’s surprise 40th birthday party in the Eagan Bush.
I introduced myself to him and told him my last name was Feehely.
That was it. He started to tell me great stories about he and his family walking through our farm to get to school on the second line.
He talked about my dad my grandparents… what a wonderful chat we had. It was a good hour at that picnic table hearing tales of my family and the Eagans.
Cherish the memories you have of such a beautiful man.
I know I will always remember the stories he told me.

There can be no dispute that my mother Rita was Patrick’s favourite sister. If there were any rebuttable presumptions to be made, they would probably trace to my dad, Edward Fitzgerald who was known simply as “Fitz” – to any Eagan worth his or her place in family lore.
Fitz loved a good argument and was prepared to take any side of one so long as it raised the ire of his Eagan brothers in-law.
John and Edward Eagan were clearly above it all, but brothers Vince, Gerry, Patrick and Charles were always fair game. The kitchen table at the old Homestead was the site of many such debates. Patrick, for his part, always stood on the side of reason.
You knew when Pat was ready to launch a counter attack because his opening words were always the same. “Well gol damn it Fitz…..”.
I look back very fondly on those times, listening and watching the friendly banter. My dad loved it and so did I. At some level, I suspect we all did.

Brother-in-law Patrick Maurice was a man keenly aware of his roots . He knew almost by heart the family history and all those connected to it .
When he and Gerry decided to write up the Eagan Family History many endless hours were spent in research and organization . It will serve as a wonderful reference for the future generations .
Pat liked to recite poems remembered from childhood and each time I visited him I was treated to a recitation .
Although his memory had faded , the words “ Lot 4 Conc. 3 ‘ always brought a smile to his face and a sparkle to his eyes and sometimes even a story !
I will miss him sitting in the chair by the nurses’ station where each Tuesday morning he welcomed the Lord into his heart by receiving Holy Communion . Rest In Peace Pat and now you can recite to the Angels who will know all the words !!

David, Janet, Karin and Families – Our condolences on your loss of a wonderful father and grandfather. Growing up Uncle Pat always took a lively interest in his many nieces and nephews and we were always welcome to visit, especially during corn on the cob season! I will always remember a road trip to Ottawa in 2005 with our family, Dad and Uncle Pat, with the plan to visit assorted relatives and attend the final game of the Ottawa Roughriders. Given our elders were in their 70s and 80s we assumed they would nap most of the journey. Instead we were treated to what was basically a five-hour Abbott and Costello routine; who knew just driving past The Big Apple on the 401 would provide material for close to an hour of comedy gold? After a busy weekend they did nap on the way home, but when we dropped Uncle Pat off his wallet was nowhere to be found. After about 15 minutes of subdued chaos while we searched the van and luggage, Dad happened to reach into a pocket and commented to Uncle Pat, “What’s your wallet doing in my coat?” It seems at some point over the weekend they had inadvertently switched very similar looking overcoats. We will miss Uncle Pat for his warmth and beautiful smile. We are blessed to have known him and know your many happy memories will help you through this time.
