Palmateer: David Charles.
Suddenly at his home, on Saturday July 24th, 2021. David Palmateer, in his 84th year, beloved father of Krista (David) Miller, Katherine (David) Waldock, and Jennifer (David) MacLachlan. Lovingly remembered by his grandchildren Drew, Bryce (Caterina), Katherine (Jose), Joel (Jen), John (Miranda) Emma, Michael, Keira, Sean, and his great-grandchildren Nico, Sadie, Iseult, and Jake. Dear brother of Annamary (D’Arcy) Kilham, Kathryn (Sam) Cureatz, Ron (Kathy) Palmateer, Dan Palmateer and Keith Palmateer. Fondly remembered by Mollie, and his nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
A life-long athlete, David enjoyed skiing above all, as well as cycling and golf. David inspired many young adults as a coach of high school and club ski racing – a role he thoroughly enjoyed. He was an avid canoeist and tripper, leading many trips in Algonquin Park.
Respecting David’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Donations in his memory to the Lung Association of Ontario would be appreciated by the family. Mr, Palmateer was my football coach at Barrie North, taught me to be a leader and a winner. Two championships later as quarterback of the Vikings I still remember those days as the best of times. Dave coached us to the best we could be. He helped me to be a man and a sportsman. Best coach I ever had. Rest in Peace Dave.

David was my high school coach in football at north, between 1964 and 68 and he was instrumental in getting me a try out for the queen’s golden gaels after which I played for 4 years. Absolutely saddened by this news. A huge part of my high school memories!’ Such an amazing Coach. He was one of a kind. I appreciated all of his support and coming to my aid during a ski racing injury. I can still remember the nurses at CG&M yelling at him for wearing his ski boots in the hospital and scuffing their floors. He set them straight.

I have many fond memories of Dave as a teacher at BDNC as well as a ski coach growing up at Snow Valley. Dave was also our gymnastic ,trampoline and springboard diving coach. He was a very positive influence on all who were coached by him. I want his family to know that he will be missed.

Dave Palmateer inspired a generation of ski racers at Eastview Secondary School. He positively influenced both my fledging athletic career and my eventual profession of alpine ski coaching for 30 years. He was also my phy-ed teacher in some capacity in 5 years of high school.
Sadly I had not seen much of Dave since then but have fond memories of him alongside Ernie Philp and Henry Haiduk at GBSSA and OFSAA events from Blue Mountain, Craigleith, Edelweiss, Mt Antoine and more as we battled every year for school ski racing supremacy! I’d like to think that from 1980 to 1985 me and my team-mates were rewarded and paid him back with many important victories including provincial championships.
Aside from holding us all to a high standard, Dave gave us the opportunity to be our best and many opportunities to lead. I am thnkful for that.
Rest in Peace Dave. Thoughts with your family, especially our team-mate Jenny!

Fond memories of wandering into the Boys PHE office at Eastview where Dave and Big Dunc were usually found. Still laugh about the well utilized ashtray prominently located on the desk (think that was mostly Dunc).
I remember the the numerous year end coaches parties where Kate and I got to spend time with all sorts of interesting characters outside the school walls. Dave was a regular attendee, and was likely part of the reason we used to get sent to bed ‘early’.
A different time, for sure, but Dave was always an advocate for young athletes, and was wiling to work with and help anyone who asked.

On a personal note, Dave and I first met as students at a high school ski event at
Bethany Ski Club in 1952. We reconnected when Eastview Secondary School in Barrie was opened in 1967, where I assisted Dave as a football and ski coach during that time.
Dave was an excellent athlete and teacher in whatever area he chose.
Thanks to Dave, he scheduled a memorable heli-skiing experience for us on a
spring break in the Rockies.
We have many fond memories of times shared with Dave.

We were so sorry to hear about Dad’s passing. I have many fond memories of him and your mom. I’m sure that your dad coached me as a young ski racer at Craigleith. He was a big part of Craigleith racing when my dad was the director of racing. Your parents were both instrumental in me getting my 1st teaching job at Eastview, putting in a good word for me. We had many hours together coaching at the high school ski meets.
I last spoke to him not long before COVID hit when I tracked him down to attend a party for Leo Vogrin at Heli Vogrin’s Heavenly Cafe, when Leo was in Collingwood for a visit. We had a nice chat on the phone and again at the restaurant.
