Stringer: Florence “Florey” (Known as Madame Stringer to her many students at Smithfield, Angus, and Tec. Beeton Schools).
Suddenly, yet peacefully, at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Toronto on Friday, April 13th, 2018. Florey (Yancoff), in her 64th year, beloved mother of Danielle (Rob Greenwood), Andrea (David) Houstan, and wife of Mike Stringer. Sadly missed by her grandchildren Caleb and Devan. Dear sister of Jordan (Lori) Yancoff and family.
The family will receive friends at Rod Abrams Funeral Home, 1666 Tottenham Road, Tottenham, 905-936-3477 on Thursday, April 19th, 2018 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm. Was remembering Madam Stringer today. I’ll always be so grateful to her. She made french class fun and helped me feel safe at school. I knew her door was always open. I spent many recess times in her office with my friends instead of going outside because of bullying. She was an amazing person and I cared so much for her.

We lost touch over the years although we briefly got in contact a few years ago. We didn’t realize how closely we had been living to each other after we left Toronto.

Today has been a hard today…I just found out that one of the teachers who inspired me to become a teacher has passed on. Mme Stringer, I have no words to explain how much you meant to me as a student, and how much the lessons you taught me, now mean to me as an educator. I remember you taking me to see Lion King in Toronto for the first time, and helping foster my love of musical theatre that is now one of my greatest passions in the school plays we did together, you coming to my house for mother’s day, or my family coming to yours for dinner, or you allowing me to be your child for a day on take your kid to work day when I was in high school so that I could come back to Tec Beeton and spend a day teaching with you. The most important thing you taught me though was how to create a safe space for a student who otherwise felt alone. I was tormented and bullied for years of elementary school, and I remember you letting me stay in at lunch and do little odd jobs for you so that I wouldn’t have to go out on the school yard and be bullied by my peers. It often felt like no one else at school was protecting me, but you always did, you always made me feel safe, and now as a teacher this is what I try and do for my students. You will be so dearly missed, but I hope you are looking down from heaven with the angels, proud of all of the students you helped foster into amazing adults. You were so much more than a teacher, you were a friend. <3

When my family moved from Sudbury to Beeton, I lost most of my French abilities without a community to share them with. Madame Stringer was the most actively encouraging teacher I could have ever hoped to have, and her influence is what pushed me to continue studying French through high school and university. I would never have gotten to where I am today, working in a completely French environment, without her support and motivation. All of her students were lucky to learn from a person with such a good heart. Je t’aime toujours, Madame.

I will always remember Madame Stringer coming over for lunch one day to our home, to a simple meal of homemade chicken soup and sandwiches.
