Sharon — Please accept our condolences. I felt Jim was a great leader who carried responsibilty with confidence.
Jim also had a great sense of humour. At some point we discussed birthdays – Jim mentioned he was born on 13 December 1938 – and I said I was born on 14 December, the next day. I told him I remembered him – he was the next crib hollering and fussing – I couldn’t get any sleep. He acknowledged the fuss and said he was just hollering for a beer.
Jim was a great man. It was an honour to have known him!
Michael and Kimberley Rinaldo says
Our deepest condolences to Sharon and the family.
Michael and I have wonderful memories of our time spent in the “Schomberg Community choir” with Jim, Sharon and the gang.
Jim, your larger than life personality, your devilish smile, your quips, your laughter, your voice…Oh that voice, will always be with us.
“How fortunate we are that in our hearts we keep forever the memories of those we love…and the time we shared”
In friendship,

To my good friend and ski buddy Sharon and all the family. Rene and I were very sorry to hear about Jim. I remember all the fun we used to have when I lived in Tottenham – Schomberg dances, corn roasts – so many memories. If you remember he even tried skiing when we lived at Hemlock. The thing he liked best was the girls skiing in the bikinis. I am sure he will be missed but take comfort in knowing he is now in a better place. Anthony sends his condolences as well. We hope to see you soon.
Love from both of us.

Hi Sharon and your family,
Here I am checking some 300 emails after an email glitch finally resolved. I’m dumbfounded to come across Jims obit, a GREAT GUY that I met some 65 years ago in Moose Jaw as budding future pilots, our futures taking very similar paths. As you know our last close association back in 1997 as we participated in the Hadj. My deepest condolences to you and yours, I will never forget him!

I met Mr. Garbutt for the first time at my uncle Tom’s birthday celebration, but I felt that I already knew him from stories shared. Through various memorable and entertaining interactions with my aunt Lori, Jamie, Stephanie, cousin Becky and step cousins, I know that Mr. Garbutt nurtured a family of strong, kind, empathetic individuals that he was proud to call his family. Embrace your many memories, share his stories and know that he will always be by your side watching over you. Until we gather again, I wish you all comfort over these tough days and weeks ahead.

Maria and I were so saddened to hear of Jim’s passing. So many great memories starting when we flew together on the ” 9 “. After one cycle, Jim brought me north to Schomberg to meet his family and have a bbq. Little did I know way back then, that I would end up living there and our friendship would extend far beyond flying.
A fine person, great pilot and valued friend.
Clear skies and light winds Jim. Rest well.

John James “Jack” Smith says
My sincere condolences to Tom, Lori and family, and the Garbutt family.
Regrettably, I only had the pleasure of meeting and conversing with Jim when I flew to Canada to attend a funeral that we both attended. In that short encounter, it didn’t take long to determine he was a principled man and a proper gentleman. I have no doubt he left his family with an abundance of love as a reliable guide to navigate through life’s many challenges and hardships with grace and self-confidence. How fortunate for you all to have shared his life with him these many years and to have been a recipient of his love. May you all find comfort in the beautiful memories you created together as a family.
With deepest sympathies for your loss,
Jack and Trisha Smith

Deepest condolences from my family and I, for your loss. I have many wonderful childhood memories of ‘Uncle’ Jim, and of our many visits with the whole family.
I know that it meant a lot to my Dad to have a last chat with Jim before his own passing, and so I offer up the verse that was shared with me by a member of their shared fraternity of pilots, at that time:
“Fly on, old friend, to whatever waits for you,
Fly on, old friend, your course was always true.
& Now we understand there’s a fair wind in the blue,
But here there’s none who would not fly with you.”
— from “High Flight”, by John Gillespie Magee
Much love and many hugs to you all,

Jim was such an amazing person and Pilot.
I have many wonderful memories of flying the DC8 with Jim, as his second officer. He always treated his crew with the utmost of respect, and was a true professional, always leading by example. Jim’s Air Canada legacy will continue to flourish through the many pilots that he worked with, during his brilliant career. And hopefully we have been Able to pass that torch, that Jim lit so long ago, to the next generation of Air Canada Pilots.

Dear Sharon, Lori, Stephanie, James and extended families.
My thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this time of sorrow. I have fond memories of our family gatherings and visits when I dropped by the house. I can remember every time Jim was always outside getting a tan on his ride on mower. He kept a well groomed property around every tree. That was a large task. He always looked like he was enjoying his outdoor time. Jim will be missed at all our family gatherings for sure. Be there for each other as this is a difficult time. And support Sharon as she has had Jim by her side forever. This will be a great big change in her life. Love you all. ❤️❤️

-Jerry Crawford-
Together, with heavy hearts, we commemorate the impactful life and honorable legacy of a strong, charismatic, and loving family man, Jim Garbutt, who made the journey “home”, and is now in Heavens embrace.
A PILOT’S PRAYER
Dear Lord, please look down on me
If You should get a chance,
While Your “eye is on the sparrow”
I’d appreciate a glance.
In Your tower up in Heaven
As You watch the eagles soar,
You know the joy I’ve felt
As Your wonders I explore.
From the early morning sunrise
To the starry moonlit nights,
My simple perch near Heaven
Has revealed Your glorious sights.
But when my flight is over
And no longer there’s a wait,
I pray for a smooth landing
At Heaven’s Pearly Gate.
Far beyond the blue horizon
There’s a “hanger in the sky”
Your home for weary pilots
Whose spirits never die.
Dearest Sharon, although no one can really enter into the sadness you are feeling, please know that many hearts are grieving with you. Jim was a true “gentleman” and will be remembered by all who knew him. May God’s Blessings continue to reign upon you and your family and may His light guide you all through the darkness of these very sad times.
To Lori (Tom), Jamie (Sandra) and Stephanie (John), when we lose someone we love, we must learn not to live without them, but to live with the love they left behind, because life isn’t forever…Love is. May each one of you, continue to find comfort now and always in the beautiful love you shared together as a family.
To Jim’s grandchildren and great grandchildren, I pass on words of wisdom that your grandfather once said to me, “Your wings already exist…All you have to do is fly.”
Cherish this last goodbye…
Sending healing prayers for comfort,
Tony, Jacqueline and Leighton xo
