Moyes, Marie (nee Steerment) lived life well. She was born in 1918 at Newcastle-upon-Tyne, U.K. second child to Robert and Maud Marion (Anstey) Steerment. After her mother’s death in 1925, and her father’s second marriage she became a much loved step-daughter of Winnifred (Povey) Steerment. Her father was posted almost immediately to India, where 7 years of wonderful experiences left her with a life-long interest in travel. The family eventually expanded to six children; Robert, Marie, and Pat, children of Maud, and Winnifred, Bernard, and Catherine, children of Winnifred.
After they returned in England, Marie trained as a nurse and served during World War II in London. In 1944, she joined the Queen Alexandra’s Imperial Military Nursing Service. They arrived on the beaches of Normandy days after D-day, and then followed the Allied troops across France, Belgium, Holland and Germany.
She met her beloved husband Philip while overseas and married him back home in 1949. They had two daughters, Rowena and Deborah, in England before immigrating to Canada in 1957.
Marie’s life was filled with service to others, both in her work in Health Care and her many volunteer positions within the church, the Canadian Cancer Society, the Distress Centre and others. Her home was a place of welcome to many. She also travelled extensively during her life including a trip to Australia and New Zealand at the age of 85! A zest for life, a remarkable energy and a fierce commitment to and love for those around her epitomized her life.
Marie gently slipped from this world and joined her beloved husband Philip on Apr 5, 2018. She has passed on a legacy of love to her daughters Rowena Moyes, Toronto, and Debbie (Art) Frizzell, Halifax, grandchildren Mark (Alex) Moyes, Dylan Frizzell, Sarah (Jeremy) Marsh, Joanna (Pete) Hinton, and Jeff Frizzell, and great grandchildren Ben, Aaron and Luke Marsh, Dexter and Allison Hinton, and William Cooper Moyes. She is also survived by her youngest sister, Cath (Tom) Davis, in England, and many nephews and nieces.
A Memorial service will be held at 11am on Saturday April 14, 2018 in Church of the Evangelists (99 Queen St. N. Tottenham). Interment in St. John’s 6th Line Cemetery. For those who wish, donations to St. Michael’s Hospital – Cardiology Program (in Memory of Marie Moyes), or the Tottenham Food Bank would be appreciated by the family. Arrangements entrusted to Rod Abrams Funeral Home Tottenham.

Marie was a frequent and welcome visitor to the Tottenham library when I worked there. She was also a valued member of the Tecumseth and West Gwillimbury Historical Society. One year she participated in our November program with stories of her experiences as a nursing sister in World War II. An entry is included in TWGHS: the First Forty Years, a publication to commemorate our 40th anniversary.
“Marie Moyes was a student nurse in England when war broke out. Her initial excitement soon turned to horror while nursing Dunkirk survivors. In 1943 as a member of the Queen Alexandra’s Imperial Military Nursing Service, Marie was posted to Dover and subsequently to a hospital ship off the French Coast following D-Day.”
The world will miss her grace and kindness.

Marie was our dear neighbour for many years on Rodcliff Rd. She was a wonderful lady who loved life to the fullest. She loved children and knitted beautiful garments for our grandchildren. They loved playing on her “tiger” and she loved watching them.
Marie was so proud of her talented children, grand children and great grandchildren. Our heartfelt condolences on your loss of this one of a kind, authentic English lady. May God bless you with His Comfort!

Marie was the best neighbour my mother Beryl had when living in Southend on Sea, England. Her nursing skills were invaluable to a young mother that my mum was at the time. I had the pleasure of spending a month with Marie and Philip over Christmas and New Year 1980/81, when they were living in Don Mills, Toronto. As a 12 year old, it goes down as the best Christmas I ever had. The experience still lives with me. My sister Helen also got the opportunity to stay with them in 1975. I’m sorry that I never got the chance to see Marie and Philip again, but they both live on in my heart and my families hearts. They are like family to me and I shall miss them dearly. Much love and thoughts to all the Moyes family at this very sad time xxx
