April 11, 1930 – November 6, 2024
Bernie was the 4th of four children born to William Hudson Marshall and Beatrice Irene Ingram. She always said that she and her siblings, Stanley, Walter and Irene had a wonderful childhood growing up in Toronto. The family holidayed every year, for a month in the summer on the Toronto Islands where they rented a cottage, and their dad would come over on weekends, closing the family hardware store to enjoy family time. Bernie and her sister, Irene, had an especially close relationship. In their teens, they would make it their mission to learn new songs together from recordings, as soon as they were available, playing them over and over and over again, much to their brother Walter’s dismay. He tried valiantly to study for his engineering classes at U of T, deciding to go to bed early and get up through the night to avoid his sisters music. The family moved a lot but always within the same area of Toronto. Bernie attended Regal Road Public School and then graduated from Oakwood Collegiate. She went on to become a legal secretary. She used to say she was born too soon, as the 10 carbon legal document was replaced by word processing.
In November 1953, Bernie married Robert Graham Roe CA (d. 2004) and lived in Mississauga before it was Mississauga – starting in Port Credit, then to Cooksville, and then to Clarkson, and then to the Erin Mills area. The family was complete with the birth of Kimberley(Jack Campbell) and Stephen (d. 2022) (Liz Blaya).
Auntie ‘Bea’ was loved by her nieces and nephews through her brother, Stan; Bill Marshall (d. 2023), Karen McKenzie, Kathy Budway (d.), Keri-Lyn Hiscock (d.2020) and her favourite (only) godson, Glen Marshall (d. 2003). And through her brother, Walt; John Marshall, Nancy Valyear, Caroline DeVries and Brien Marshall. And through her sister, Irene; Susan Stroeder, David Peebles, and Tim Peebles. And through her brother -in-law & sister-in-law, Jim & Anne Roe; Charles Roe.
Bernie’s grandchildren brought great joy and pride to her; Galen Campbell (Rosalyn), Lucas Campbell (Jennie), Hilary Campbell and Jennifer Roe (Marco). And great grandchildren brought even more joy! Dietrich Campbell, Alaina Campbell and Liam Santavenere.
She went into care at Simcoe Manor in Beeton in 2022, and was she ever annoyed about that! But she learned to love it and couldn’t say enough about the fabulous PSWs and nurses that worked there, tending to her needs. Our family thanks all of you in the Essa wing, for your caring and consideration especially through her last days.
As a last detail, Bernie loved the therapy dogs that visited Simcoe Manor by way of St. John’s Ambulance and their volunteers, and often spoke of their visits with a big smile.
If you care to donate in Bernie’s memory, St. John’s Ambulance Therapy Dogs, The Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides or War Amps would be good choices.
A celebration of Bernie’s life will be held at Schomberg United Church, worshiping in the lower level of St. Mary Magdalene Anglican Church at 116 Church Street, Schomberg, at 5PM on Wednesday, November 20th. Please wear brightly coloured clothing if you plan to attend. That would have been Bernie’s wish!
Meal to follow.

Kim – I am so sorry to hear about Aunt Beas passing. I have many fond memories of her from years past, when us cousins were in our younger days. I remember my mom, Jean , commenting often how much she enjoyed her phone chats with your mom. Your mom was the last of a generation and will be missed by many. On behalf of myself, Brien, Nancy and Caroline, please except our sincere condolences. I would truly have loved to be able to attend the memorial today but unfortunately could not get away. It would have been wonderful to see all the family again and get caught up with everyone. I mentioned to Susan that maybe we could try for some kind of family reunion next summer. I hope you have a great tribute to Bea tonight. You and your family will be in our thoughts.
Take care,
(Cousin) John Marshall

Although I didn’t know your mother, Kim, I can say that she sounds like quite the lady. Your comment that “…Bernie loved the therapy dogs that visited Simcoe Manor by way of St. John’s Ambulance and their volunteers” struck a chord as my mother also lived in a retirement home and found the St. John’s therapy dogs’ regular visits were a highlight of her day. It’s also interesting that “(Bernie)… lived in Mississauga before it was Mississauga – starting in Port Credit, then to Cooksville, and then to Clarkson, and then to the Erin Mills area.” I also lived and worked in that area for over 35 years. So I feel a connection in several ways to your mother. Please accept my condolences at her passing.

Kim and Jack + Galen, Lucas, Hilary, Jennifer and extended family,
I got to know Bernice during her time at Simcoe Manor. She always spoke so highly of her family and she honoured the travel that you did through mentioning about the travel her and Robert use to do with joy and reflection.
I wanted you to know I am thinking of you all as you remember your many memories with Bernice.
May Bernice and sister Irene be enjoying some Glenn Miller music with the angels.
Sincerely,
Colleen McKerry (aka Barb)
